  • Use our list of what effective K–8 math programs do based on current research to aid your decision-making.

Educator Smiling While Using Laptop

Like other education leaders across the U.S., you may be searching for a K–8 math program that can boost student math achievement. The program could be core curriculum or supplemental resources, but either way, the evaluation process and criteria will be much the same. In this article, we’ll walk through important ways to evaluate a K–8 math program as you try to meet your school or distric³Ù’s unique needs.

What Districts Should Consider Before Adoption

Is the math program ²â´Ç³Ü’r±ð evaluating completely or partially digital? If so, we recommend starting with the idea that every technology earn its place in the classroom. With this in mind, Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ has created a resource specifically for education leaders: Learning by Design: A District Framework for Evaluating Classroom Technology. This framework identifies six dimensions for deciding whether a technology was built to enable learning through distinct, technology-based instructional practices not easily replicated with print materials or offline activities.

Once ²â´Ç³Ü’r±ð confident that a digital program is worth investigating further, there are six areas to explore more in depth.

Grade-Band Coverage Across Elementary and Middle School

Does the program support instruction across grades K–8 or is it focused on either K–5 or 6–8? Choosing a K–8 math program may offer benefits such as lower overall cost, easier school- or district-wide implementation and educator training, and reduced mental load for your team when choosing instructional resources. Also a K–8 math program concern: ³Û´Ç³Ü’l±ô want to make sure that content is age appropriate and relevant for students in each of the different grade levels to meet their developing capabilities and needs.

Standards Alignment and Instructional Coherence

When a program claims to be aligned to standards, what evidence does it provide? Does it document what standard or standards are covered in each lesson and provide a scope and sequence? Documentation may exist separately from lessons, but especially with edtech, there may be more than one way to see standards covered in each lesson. Of course, a supplemental math program will not cover all of the standards that a core curriculum will, but you should be easily able to see what standards are addressed.

Coherence can refer to how well key instructional system components such as state standards, curricula, and assessments regarding what instruction should look like. Without coherence, teachers may strictly use state standards as their guide, spend time leaning on their colleagues for support, or simply pull back from the instructional system as much as they can. Therefore, ensure that any K–8 math program ²â´Ç³Ü’r±ð considering will match your current messages about what instruction should involve.

Regarding instruction, coherence means that students encounter the same language, routines, and approaches, which end up reinforcing learning.

Student Engagement and Teacher Usability

As our Education Insights 2025–2026 Report showed, 90% of teachers, principals, and superintendents agree that engagement is critical to their ²õ³Ù³Ü»å±ð²Ô³Ù²õ’ success. Despite this, 80% of students say they are bored in school at some point each week. What should you look for in a K–8 math program that will keep students engaged? Getting students to think deeply, using technology intentionally, and providing real-world relevance are excellent indicators that programs will be engaging.

Even though a math program may provide engaging lessons and content, does it make it easy for teachers to assign and deliver those lessons or share content with the class? Related to standards alignment and priorities, does the math program give districts a way to help teachers focus on certain standards based on district goals? It may be easy to discount a program’s usability as a factor in teacher success, but poor usability may slow them down or convince them to avoid the program entirely, wasting funds and possibly reducing instructional quality.

Differentiation, Intervention, and Enrichment

Some form of support for differentiation in Tier 1 instruction is a must-have to reach as many learners as possible with a K–8 math program. This could be ready-to-use resources that are already differentiated, clear guidance on ways to differentiate instruction to meet different needs, or technology that does some or all of the differentiation work for your team. Since manual differentiation is such a time-intensive effort for teachers, a math program that lightens the load significantly should be a top priority.

Ideally, ²â´Ç³Ü’r±ð looking at a math program that also enables Tier 2 and Tier 3 intervention for students who need extra support and enrichment opportunities for students who need new challenges. Student benefits from working with a familiar program include a reduced cognitive load and greater instructional coherence, which can boost learning. For schools, this reduces the complexity of teachers’ toolkits, removes the need for supplementation on their own, and may offer cost savings over purchasing separate programs for each student group.

Assessment, Reporting, and Progress Monitoring

Diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments; reporting; and progress monitoring all support data-driven decision-making, which strengthens teaching and learning in many ways. For example:

  • Improves the accuracy of placement in different tiers of instruction and boosts learning outcomes of struggling students
  • Informs instructional decisions and differentiation aimed at meeting individual student needs
  • Provides insight into student, classroom, school, or district performance overall

A K–8 math program that enables assessment, reporting, and progress monitoring offers similar benefits to those mentioned in our discussion of differentiation, intervention, and enrichment. These include a lower cognitive load for students and a less complex set of tools for teachers to master. Adopting a program with robust assessments built in could open up the possibility of dropping separate assessment solutions that you might be using.

Implementation and Professional Learning

Be sure to dive into what implementation would involve at the district, school, and classroom levels, like how the program would fit into your current educator tools and resources and connect to existing systems. If ²â´Ç³Ü’r±ð evaluating an edtech program, we identified seven action items for successful implementation that can serve as a guide. Don’t forget to ask a key question of the vendor: Do you provide implementation support to get us up and running with less time and effort?

K–8 math programs will likely include some professional learning, even if ¾±³Ù’s limited to getting started, to help your team incorporate it in classroom instruction. Beyond the basics, the vendor should either bundle more extensive professional learning with the program or offer it as a separate package. Options may be virtual or in person, on demand or live, single or multi-session, or combinations of those. Once you see what your choices are, you can match them to your needs and preferences. To be effective, professional learning will have characteristics like a focus on strategies, active learning, collaboration, models of effective practice, and more.

What Makes a K–8 Math Program Effective?

Here’s what current research says effective K–8 math programs do:

  • Balance conceptual understanding with procedural fluency
  • Build progressively from one concept to another and revisit concepts during the year and across grade levels
  • Map all lessons and assessments to specific standards that are identified for educators
  • Use visual models, manipulatives, hands-on activities, and structured practice to develop understanding
  • Offer Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 instruction using coherent language, routines, and approaches
  • Provide data-driven insights to inform instruction
  • Emphasize problem-solving, reasoning, and mathematical practices
  • Connect learning to real-world applications
  • Integrate differentiation, intervention, and enrichment coherently
  • Support teacher implementation through ongoing professional learning

Questions to Ask Before Choosing a K–8 Math Program

Now that we’ve explored various characteristics of K–8 math programs, you might want to put together some questions that can help you decide on a particular program.Ìý

For the vendor:

  • Do you have case studies or data from schools/districts like ours that have used this program?
  • What data would indicate this program is working for our students? How long should we expect it to take?
  • What is the total cost of implementation, including materials, professional learning, technology, and ongoing support? Over how many years?
  • How is technology used in the program?
  • Is there an active learning community associated with the program?

Questions to ask internally:

  • Does this program address the specific math achievement challenges we’re facing?
  • How does this program align with our distric³Ù’s strategic goals and priorities for math education?
  • What would we need to change to successfully implement this program?
  • How will this program work alongside our existing initiatives?
  • Do we have teacher buy-in for this program?

1. Adaptive Learning Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ Fill Skill Gaps and Prevent Learning Loss

Learning is cumulative, and small skill gaps can become major roadblocks if left unaddressed. Adaptive programs can identify missed concepts early, sometimes before a teacher even sees them, and automatically provide targeted practice or revisit foundational concepts.Ìý

The How: Continuously Detect, Assess, and Target Ìý
Adaptive learning programs work behind the scenes to detect when a student is struggling. The programs don’t wait for formal, summative assessment to intervene. Instead, programs like DreamBox Math and DreamBox Reading use continuous formative assessments to analyze patterns like repeated errors, hesitation, and inefficient strategies. The programs then respond instantly to offer support the moment a student needs it, without disrupting a studen³Ù’s learning momentum. At the same time, these programs capture student progress and provide data-rich reports that offer educators actionable insights, enabling them to differentiate instruction, target small-group work, and make informed decisions that deepen student learning.Ìý

Why it Matters

Catching learning gaps early keeps students on track and prevents them from falling behind. This proactive, just-in-time support is especially effective in addressing unfinished learning and avoiding costly remediation.Ìý

Fast Fact

Many educators already know how impactful adaptive instruction can be, in fact 93% of teachers believe that adaptive learning would help students learn more effectively.

2. Meet Students Where They Are Whether Behind or Ahead of Grade Level

Adaptive learning platforms don’t just deliver digital content. They respond in real time to how each student learns, creating personalized virtual learning experiences that boost confidence, fill knowledge gaps, and help every student grow, at their own pace, and in their own way.Ìý

The How: Track, Analyze, Adjust in Real Time
Adaptive programs track more than just right or wrong answers, they continuously analyze how students solve problelms, how long they take, and where they hesitate. Based on this data, programs like DreamBox Math and DreamBox Reading adjust instruction in real time, tailoring the content, pacing, and scaffolding in real time.

Why it Matters

Adaptive learning solutions help create the Zone of Proximal Development, the space where learning is most effective because it’s just beyond what a student can do independently, but still within reach.

Fast Fact

Did you know that about three quarters of students say that learning at their own pace would increase the likelihood of engaging in lessons, feeling empowered in school, and feeling more prepared for the future?

3. Adaptive Learning Builds Growth Mindset and Confidence

A growth mindset is essential for learning. Adaptive learning technology reinforces this by helping students connect effort with progress. As they receive feedback and independently overcome challenges, they gain confidence that their abilities can grow with practice.

The How: Encourage Exploration, Productive Struggle, and Independence
DreamBox Math and Reading lessons are designed to support agency and progress through independent exploration and productive struggle. This type of adaptive technology offers hints and scaffolds only when necessary, allowing students to learn and grow by trying things, making mistakes, and seeing what works.ÌýAs students successfully solve problems on their own, they build confidence and become more willing to take on new challenges.

Why it Matters

Students who believe they can figure things out are more likely to stay engaged, take academic risks, and develop lifelong learning habits. In this space of productive struggle, students stay motivated and make progress, challenged by content ³Ù³ó²¹³Ù’s appropriately difficult, not too easy, and not overwhelming.

Fast Fact

Recent research found that 94% of superintendents believe that personalized learning solutions that leverage adaptive technology to customize instruction to each studen³Ù’s skills, preferences, and interests, can effectively boost student confidence.

Create Student-Centered Learning Environments with Adaptive Learning

AdaptivityÌý¾±²õ²Ô’tÌýjust about technology.ÌýI³Ù’sÌýaboutÌýcreating responsive, student-centered classrooms.ÌýBy choosing adaptive learning tools likeÌýDreamBoxÌýMath and Reading,ÌýeducatorsÌýcan support every learner, close skill gaps, and build the confidence students need to succeed, now and in the future.

DreamBox, a trusted name in personalized, adaptive math instruction, has been part of many students’ journeys through elementary school. But middle school is different, and students are ready to level up.ÌýÌý

We are committed to our partnership with educators and rely on their feedback to guide innovations that ensure the most for their students. To meet the evolving needs of learners, DreamBox tested early designs with students to learn what resonates in grades 6–8 and used their feedback to modernize the engagement.Ìý

The result? An exciting environment that combines an elevated age-appropriate environment and a more vibrant design that conveys a youthful sense of adventure and independence and thoughtfully crafted to support self-directed learning while maintaining a sense of fun and curiosity about math.ÌýÌýÌý

Ìý
  • There’s something powerful about seeing your progress in real-time. With a prominently featured weekly goal tracker, students can’t miss an opportunity to self-monitor their achievements, stay motivated, and remain accountable to their learning goals.ÌýÌý
  • I³Ù’s augmenting math with an all-new vibe. SayÌýhello to a fresh experience —t³ó¾±²õ vibrant and engaging engagement is reflective of middle schoolers’ tastes and personal interests.ÌýÌý

“I like this design better than the actual one . . . if you change your design like this and then people take a look at it, they're probably going to start wanting to work on DreamBox more often.

Why Educators Will Love It

The DreamBox Math Difference

Every student is a math student. °Õ³ó²¹³Ù’s why DreamBox is dedicated to personalizing learning to meet every learner’s unique needs. °Â±ð’v±ð worked closely with dedicated educators and their students to learn how we can continue building on this work with new product enhancements that remove more barriers to math engagement for every student. Students will notice improved opportunities to access and engage in the program, making the math experience more enjoyable for all.ÌýÌý

Research demonstrates that when students are meaningfully and regularly engaged in DreamBox, it can drive real learning growth. Ìý

Boosting Independent Engagement through Improved Accessibility

Access to great learning experiences is in our DNA, and we aim to set a whole new standard. To go beyond just compliance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) standards, we have worked together with teachers, special education experts, and students with disabilities to deliver product improvements that make the experience more equitable and effective for all students.Ìý

With DreamBox every student is empowered to independently engage in interactive problem-solving— equipped with access to the tools and mathematical vocabulary they need, in the way they need them— so they can develop conceptual understanding, apply a variety of strategies, and gain competence and confidence in mathematical reasoning and skills. K-5 lessons now include:Ìý

Compatibility with assistive technology tools such as magnification and screen reader.Ìý

Screen reader with enhanced alternative descriptions supports concept understanding and streamlines problem-solving for students with limited and low vision.Ìý

See how a student with limited vision can work independently in DreamBox.

Easy-to-tap, -move, and -place elements ease interaction and accommodate a variety of devices, physical needs, and learning styles.ÌýÌý

Intuitive keyboard navigation lets students know where they are on the lesson page and within the manipulative.Ìý

a11ytenframe gif

Clear visuals enable students with low vision and color blindness to distinguish selectable foreground elements from the background.ÌýÌý

In addition to these exciting updates, the team is ensuring that all lessons have the ability to replay instructions so that students can easily refer back to the task at hand. Ìý

Easing Lesson Interaction for Racecourse Lessons

°Â±ð’v±ð channeled the enthusiasm that last year’s updates to the Clocks lessons generated. This year, we are pleased to announce a major update to our Racecourse lessons.ÌýÌý

In this lesson, students learn to represent equivalent fractions as part of a whole, using proportional reasoning to ensure their car reaches its destination. A number line is represented as a course where students place distance markers and add stops at equivalent distances along the way.Ìý

Guided by student and teacher feedback, we made a series of improvements that make it easier for students to get started and interact with the manipulative as they progress through this lesson. Ìý

Racecourse Phase 3 Updated Context Roadtrip png

A new “Road Tripâ€ context is more relatable for students and makes the tasks clearer. Ìý

Numbered intervals along the course allow for easier skip counting and streamlines the problem-solving process.Ìý

Meters deplete and refill to provide visual feedback on station placement as the car now moves along the course.Ìý

Larger visuals and more space make it easier for touchscreen (and all) users to place markers along the course.Ìý

Clearer instructions and updated scaffolding ensure students have support and meaningful feedback as they progress through the lesson.ÌýÌýÌý

When you put all of this together, it makes a profound difference in the student experience. This is reflected in ²õ³Ù³Ü»å±ð²Ô³Ù²õ’ reactions.ÌýÌýÌý

We’r±ð not stopping here.Ìý We are committed to making every moment matter more in DreamBox Math, to ensure each student can work in their own place, progress at their own pace, experience joy, and gain confidence on their individual journeys toward mathematical excellence.Ìý
